This past Friday, February 9th in Arriaga, Chiapas, a massive operative was carried out against some 500 Central American migrants aboard the Chiapas-Mayab freight train. Participating were hundreds of migration officials, members of the PFP (Federal Preventative Police) and AFI (Federal Investigation Agency), in another of what have been increasing aggressions against Central American migrants.

I’ve been stateside nearly seven months now after three years in Mexico (two coordinating the Casa de la Paz in Chiapas). And though the initial tidal waves of rage and despair have quieted somewhat, I can’t say that I’m any closer to embracing my new lifestyle.

Immigration & Hardship

Republicans need some form of immigration reform to assure electoral success in the upcoming November legislative elections, this much is clear to most US political analysts these days. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like a Bush administration victory on this issue is going to be quite as easy as they’d hoped.

The Attorney General of the Mexican Republic (PGR) is investigating National Institute of Migration (INM) officials who are believed to be part of an extensive network dedicated to trafficking undocumented immigrants. This network operates throughout Chiapas and extends to other migration stations in the country.
