In this article, Magali offers a detailed account of the days she spent following la Otra Campaña during its stay in Oaxaca. Magali is currently a volunteer with the Servico Internacional Para la Paz (SIPAZ), an organizational partner of the Peace House.

In these recent weeks, Peace House volunteers have been able to get out of San Cristóbal for a bit, traveling with La Otra Campaña and visiting the Zapatista caracol at Oventic. As usual, we’ve invited them to share their experiences with us in this month’s newsletter. Joy writes about her time visiting a particularly strong and rebellious community in Oaxaca while following La Otra, and Krista shares her thoughts on searching for common ground and understanding as an international in the struggle for revolution in Chiapas.

We are pleased to report that the Chiapas Peace House Project has recently been selected to receive a $2000 grant from the A.J. Muste Memorial Institute. The institute supports projects dedicated to nonviolent social change. The funds we have received will go towards establishing a second Peace House and staff positions in the state of Oaxaca.

I recently had the privilege to attend the SERAZLN language school in Oventic, Chiapas for a week in February, where I studied Spanish amidst the Zapatista autonomous secondary school and the Junta de Buen Gobierno. I arrived in Oventic on Saturday with a friend, and after passing through the customary checkpoints to approve our presence in Oventic, we settled into our wooden bunks at the end of the carretera (highway) at the bottom of the hill.
